The Safety and Risk Management Department’s mission is to support safe practices in support of scholarship, research and patient care for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the VCU Health System. Our work involves laboratory safety, chemical safety, environmental investigations, occupational health, fire safety, and insurance program management. Our goal is to engage the multitude of stakeholders across the university and the health system to promote an empowering safety culture.
Tom is the Assistant Vice President for Safety and Risk Management at Virginia Commonwealth University. His portfolio includes the oversight of all COVID health and safety response; risk management; enterprise risk management; insurance; research safety and facility safety programs. He has approached these roles through leadership that takes a pragmatic approach to safety and risk management, while actively promoting the safety of our faculty, students and staff at the academic campus, our health sciences campus and our campus in Doha, Qatar.
He has held similar positions at the City University of New York; Madison Square Garden; and the American Museum of Natural History. Of note, he was the Director of Safety at Madison Square Garden on 11 September 2001 and is an Intelligence Officer in the Navy Reserve. He has held leadership positions at the tactical, operational and strategic level through two wars and two national emergencies.
