Laboratory Design and Construction

All laboratory construction and renovation projects at VCU should include Safety and Risk Management representatives at the design and scoping phase of the project.  This process is focused on ensuring an accurate hazard inventory for new or renovated lab space is shared with the engineer of record responsible for codes/standards and that safety requirements are included in the design, commissioning and acceptance of the finished construction product.

To ensure laboratories are designed and constructed to provide baseline safety features (i.e. fire separations/sprinklers/controls, single pass containment ventilation with negative pressure, emergency equipment, shielding, security or other containment) appropriate to the proposed and future use.  Laboratories at VCU should meet a minimum standard to capture hazards, prevent exposures and contain fire or spills/releases of hazardous materials.
